Customers who do not pay in full the amount owed on their monthly statement (the "balance") by the due date (that is, at the end of the "grace period") and are not in a promotional period owe interest ("finance charges") are known in the industry as "revolvers".

As bank accounts for students, under 18 year old and elderly do not attract many (sometimes none at all) electronic transaction fees, the use of EFTPOS by the younger generations is being highly prevalent.

This popularity may be partially attributable to two main factors: the convenience and safety of not having to carry cash (or at least, large amounts of cash) and the prevalence and availability of "bank machines" (automated teller machine or "ATM", or automated bank machine or "ABM") on the work.

Only very limited transactions (such as paying small autoroute tolls) are accepted without PIN. Almost all establishments in the United Kingdom that accept credit cards also accept debit cards (although not always Solo and Visa Electron), but a minority of merchants, for cost reasons, accept debit cards and not credit cards (for example the Post Office).   EMVco, the pany responsible for the long-term maintenance of the system, upgraded the specification in 2000 and most recently in 2004. Physically the card is a ISO 7810 card like a credit card, however its functionality is more similar to writing a check as the funds are withdrawn directly from the cardholder's bank account; some cards are referred to as check cards.

The various standards emerging are local in focus and are not patible, though the MIFARE card from Phillips has a considerable market share in the US and Europe.

The backers of EMV claim it is a paradigm shift in the way one looks at payment systems. The difference between the two being that EFTPOS transactions are authorized by a personal identification number (PIN) while credit card transactions are usually authorized by the printing and signing of a receipt.

The first version of the EMV system was released in 1994. Most card holders choose to pay around a,¬5 more in their annual fee to additionally have a Visa or a MasterCard logo on their Carte Bleue, so that the card is accepted internationally.

For extra security, the CVV2 code is not printed on the card but rather sent separately to the customer in a secured envelope. If, however, even $1.00 of the total balance remained unpaid, interest would be charged on the full $1,000 from the date of purchase until the payment is received.
